Mille Lacs County Planning& & Zoning Meeting Jan 14

Well, they tabled the proposal and agreed to set up a subcommittee comprised of one county commissioner, two planning/zoning commissioners, two resort owners and one township supervisor.

Frank Courteau, a County Commissioner who wasn't at the meeting (he's not on the P/Z Committee), did call Bob Hoefert (P/Z member) to tell him he supported the idea of a subcommittee and he would volunteer to be a part of it. That was great!

Thanks to all of you for your support SO FAR. We'll let the Messenger summarize the discussion later. Just wanted to let you know the outcome!! We'll be needing more and will let you know...

Glad you guys are blogging. Check out the story on our website. I put in a little video clip of Steve Johnson.

If you'd add a link to the Messenger to your blog, we'd love it.

I would question if the county can legally do this. Can they create "codes" for private non-permanent structures placed on private land? If so, then would they not be forced to do the same to ALL structures on land in Mille Lacs county? Think of the folks that have a hunting trailer house, old camper, etc... on a parcel of private land. We all know there are many of them out there and most of those structures wouldn't even be close to any kind of housing code. Are they going to enforce those same rules to them? If not, there's a discrimination issue against the resorts and their clients, which becomes a potential legal issue.

I'm also concerned that the several thousand dollar investment my family made with the agreement that we could use it in the winter AND summer has just been reduced to a very expensive ice house that can only be realistically used for 6-8 weeks out of the year for fishing. The justification would be nullified and the value of our investment would take a substantial hit so our ability to recoup our losses would be all but eliminated. Would I be able to hold the county responsible for that loss in value? We spent $7500 on the house alone and have invested over $1000 into it since. Not many would pay $8500 for a house that isn't on an axle that can only be used for 6-8 weeks a year...AFTER paying an additional seasonal fee of $800+. If I wanted an extravagant ice house just to use in the winter, I would have bought an Ice Castle for the same amount and that would have allowed me to fish any lake I choose.

This is obviously a ploy to get more money from their largest client...the common man who's already getting smacked by a struggling economy. Who can afford to consistently visit the ML area if they don't have this lodging? Not many. Who will spend their money at the bait shops, gas stations, bars/restaurants and grocery stores if nobody is up there?

The Mille Lacs area is not unique in its offerings to the sportsman and ATV/snowmobiling enthusiast. We can/will find other locals to frequent if our summer lodging options are removed/reduced.

Sorry for the rant. Just irks me that we have to even discuss this. Admittedly I'm biased but I feel I have every right to be. I had plans on spending valuable family time up there for years to come and that's now in jeopardy due to someone's desire to get more money. If this passes, I'll still fish there on occaission, but I'll buy all of my gas, bait, food and beverages here in the cities and bring them up. It's more of a hassle for me, but if the county wants to make it about money and not support the businesses as that would only put my stamp of approval on their decision.

I realize I'm only one person, but perhaps it's given you something to think about.
